Something about yourself:
My name is Charles Santoso. I'm an artist/illustrator currently living in Sydney, Australia. During daytime, I work for an animation studio called Animal Logic, creating concept art (with a focus on character design) for animated features and TV commercials. In my spare time I illustrate my personal projects, doing some drawings for group & future solo exhibitions. I use Photoshop for my digital works and I like to use pencil for my traditional works. These couple of months, I've also started to dive into the world of oils & acrylics.
When did you start drawing/painting and why?
I think I always like to express myself through drawing since I was a little kid. To be able to pour my thoughts and emotions into my drawing/painting has always been really important process to give myself a contentment in life. These days I hope my works can somehow touch other people's emotions too.
What is your creative process like?
For my personal work, I usually started with doodling lots of sketches or looking back to some sparks of ideas that I might've drawn in my mini sketchbook. Most of the time, my aim is to create a story moment, even when I draw a standing character/creature - even creatures have their own unique stories. After a particular sketch jump out at me, I then take it and polish it further. This includes finding references, do a couple of studies and variations before finally move to creating the final illustration/design.. either straight into digital or with traditional medium.
What kind of music do you listen while you are working?
This depends on the piece that I'm working on. Ambience music that I can play over and over again are good.. a specific movie soundtrack for a specific piece is always a great one too.
What inspires you most of all?
Because for some reason my brain is always filled with imaginative stuff, these days I'm more inspired by things that happened in daily life - both mundane or extraordinaire. I find it fascinating how different people/animals/other elements react to different situations. My personal views on these daily situations combined with random stuff that happen in my mind are things that tickle my brain every day.
Artists you admire:
There are way too many great artists that I admire.. each for a different reason but mostly because of their unique personal vision - I don't think I can list all of them here. Old masters like Mucha, John Singer Sargent, NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker are so great.. you can also find the list of the great living artists/designers on the right hand side of my blog and that's just a few that I put in.. there are so many that I'm sure I missed there.
How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?
I promote my work through my website, blog and other usual social media (twitter, facebook, etc).
What are you working on at this time?
I just finished a series of illustrations for Kinokuniya Book Store in Sydney, Australia. For daytime work wise, I involve in creating some visual development works for some movies and also giving art direction for commercials that hopefully will be up early next year. I also still working on various personal projects in my free time - one of them is a children book that will hopefully see the light of the day one day.

Mi nombre es Charles Santoso. Soy un artista / ilustrador que vive actualmente en Sydney, Australia. Durante el día, trabajo para un estudio de animación llamado Animal Logic, creando arte conceptual (con un enfoque en el diseño de personajes) para animaciones y anuncios de televisión. En mi tiempo libre ilustro mis proyectos personales, haciendo dibujos para exposiciones individuales y grupales para el futuro. Uso Photoshop para mis obras digitales y me gusta el lápiz para mis trabajos tradicionales. Estos dos últimos meses, también he comenzado a sumergirme en el mundo del óleo y los acrílicos.
¿Cuándo
empezaste a dibujar/pintar y por qué?
Creo que desde siempre me ha gustado expresarme a través del dibujo, desde que era un niño pequeño. Poder verter mis pensamientos y emociones en mi dibujo / pintura siempre ha sido un proceso realmente importante para encontrar la satisfacción en mi vida. Ahora mismo espero que mis obras, de alguna manera, también pueden tocar las emociones de otras personas.
¿Cómo es
tu proceso creativo?
Mi trabajo personal generalmente se inicia con un montón de garabatos o echando un viztazo a algunas de las ideas que he dibujado en mi sketchbook. La mayoría de las veces, mi objetivo es crear un momento de la historia, incluso cuando dibujo simplemente un personaje o criatura -incluso las criaturas tienen sus historias propias y únicas. Después de perfilar un dibujo en particular, lo tomo y lo perfecciono en profundidad. Esto incluye encontrar referencias, hacer un par de estudios y variaciones antes de proceder a la creación de la ilustración o diseño final, ya sea directamente en formato digital o con un medio tradicional.
¿Qué
tipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?
Depende de la pieza que estoy trabajando. La música ambiental que pueda poner una y otra vez es buena. Una banda sonora específica para una determinada pieza también es una buena idea.
¿Qué es
lo que más te inspira?
Por alguna razón mi mente siempre está llena de cosas imaginativas, aunque en estos días me siento más inspirado por cosas que pasaron en la vida cotidiana, tanto mundanas como extraordinarias. Me parece fascinante cómo diferentes personas, animales y objetos reaccionan a diferentes situaciones. Mi opinión personal sobre estas situaciones diarias junto con cosas al azar que suceden en mi mente son los elementos que activan mi cerebro día a día.
Artistas
a los que admiras:
Hay demasiados grandes artistas a los que admiro... cada uno por una razón diferente, pero sobre todo por su visión única y personal. No creo que pudiera hacer aquí una lista de todos ellos. Viejos maestros como Mucha, John Singer Sargent, NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker son tan grandes... También se puede encontrar una lista de artistas vivos y grandes diseñadores a los que admiro en la columna derecha de mi blog y esos son sólo unos pocos. Estoy seguro de que hay muchos que se me olvidan.
¿Cómo
usas internet para promocionar/vender tu arte?
Promociono mi trabajo a través de mi web, blog y otros medios sociales habituales (Twitter, Facebook, etc).
¿En qué
estás trabajando en este momento?
Acabo de terminar una serie de ilustraciones para la tienda de libros Kinokuniya en Sydney, Australia. Durante el día, trabajo en la creación de algunas obras de desarrollo visual para algunas películas y también en la dirección artística de algunos anuncios que se espera que estén en el aire a principios del próximo año. También sigo trabajando en varios proyectos personales en mi tiempo libre. Uno de ellas es un libro para niños que espero que salga a la luz algún día.
