Something about yourself:

I'm British, but I live in Cyprus and work from a studio in a hillside village. Most of my work is hand drawn and I use Rotring Rapidograph pens for everything.

When did you start drawing/painting and why?

I've always loved drawing, but I first started taking serious lessons when I was eleven/twelve. My parents paid for some watercolour lessons with a local artist and he taught me a lot.

What is your creative process like?

I always start with a pencil sketch, then ink drawings, then colour (if required). I treat my work like a 9-5 job and I draw every day.

What kind of music do you listen while you areworking?

When I'm working on illustrations I like to listen to Radio 4. If I'm painting, then I like to play John Martyn.

What inspires you most of all?

The landscape; especially panoramic or aerial views.

Artists you admire:

I like a lot of artists but one artist who I really admire is Neil Gower; he has a very accomplished and varied portfolio and has made some beautiful work.

How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?

I'm not good at self promotion, but I try to update my websites frequently and make sure I tag my images carefully.

What are you working on at this time?

A map illustration of China and some watercolours of fish as well as an incredible children's book written by L.B Mara.

Soy británica pero vivo en Chipre y trabajo en un estudio en una pequeña aldea. La mayor parte de mi trabajo lo realizo dibujando a mano y utilizo rotuladores Rotring Radiograph para todo.

¿Cuándoempezaste a dibujar/pintar y por qué?

Siempre me ha gustado dibujar pero la primera vez que empecé a tomar lecciones en serio fue a los diez u once años. Mis padres me pagaron algunas clases de acuarela con un artista local y me enseñó mucho.

¿Cómo estu proceso creativo?

Siempre empiezo con un boceto a lápiz, luego tinta y después color (si es necesario). Considero mi trabajo como una jornada completa cinco días a la semana y dibujo cada día.

¿Quétipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?

Cuando trabajo en ilustraciones me gusta escuchar Radio 4. Si estoy pintando me gusta poner John Martyn.

¿Qué eslo que más te inspira?

El paisaje, especialmente vistas aéreas o panorámicas.

Artistasa los que admiras:

Me gustan muchos artistas pero uno al que admiro especialmente es Neil Gower; tiene un portfolio muy logrado y variado y ha realizado algunos trabajos muy bellos.

¿Cómousas internet para promocionar/vender tu arte?

No soy buena con la promoción, pero intento actualizar mis webs con frecuencia y me aseguro de etiquetar mis imágenes correctamente.

¿En quéestás trabajando en este momento?

Un mapa ilustrado de China, algunas acuarelas de peces y un libro para niños increíble escrito por L.B Mara.

Meet Dexter

Dexter is the latest work I've done for school. It's a 3D model of one of the robots included in the coloring book I made recently (you can see it here). I modeled and rendered it in Catia V5. I've spent a few hours working on it and a few more waiting but I'm very happy with the result. I want to start making more of these models, so stay tuned :)

Dexter es el último trabajo que he hecho para la facultad. Es un modelo 3D de uno de los robots que se incluyen en el libro de colorear que hice hace poco y podéis ver aquí. Lo he modelado y renderizado en Catia V5. Han sido unas horas de trabajo y otras tantas de espera pero estoy muy contenta con el resultado. Quiero empezar a realizar más modelos de este tipo, así que estad atentos :)

I have a little friend named Violeta. My friend is 6 years old and she draws everything she sees. Best of all is sometimes she draws things that only she is able to see so the rest of the people can see them too. I recently had the great honor that she drew for me the piece you see above. It's inspired by Edavrd Munch's The Scream but this one is so much nicer than the original because it's sunny in it.

In the photo below you can see my friend Violeta with her cat Buba. Remember her face because she will be a famous painter when she grow up and all of us will want to have one of her paintings in our living room =)

Tengo una pequeña amiga que se llama Violeta. Mi amiga Violeta tiene 6 años y dibuja todo lo que ve. Lo mejor de todo es que a veces dibuja cosas que solo ella es capaz de ver y así el resto del mundo podemos verlas también. Hace poco tuve el gran honor de que me dedicara el dibujo que veis arriba. Está inspirado en El grito de Edvard Munch, pero mola más que el original porque en este hace sol.

En la foto de abajo podéis ver a mi amiga Violeta con su gato Buba. Acordaos de su cara porque cuando sea mayor será una pintora famosa y todos querremos tener un cuadro suyo en nuestro salón =)

Four Seasons

Something about yourself:

My name is Charles Santoso. I'm an artist/illustrator currently living in Sydney, Australia. During daytime, I work for an animation studio called Animal Logic, creating concept art (with a focus on character design) for animated features and TV commercials. In my spare time I illustrate my personal projects, doing some drawings for group & future solo exhibitions. I use Photoshop for my digital works and I like to use pencil for my traditional works. These couple of months, I've also started to dive into the world of oils & acrylics.

When did you start drawing/painting and why?

I think I always like to express myself through drawing since I was a little kid. To be able to pour my thoughts and emotions into my drawing/painting has always been really important process to give myself a contentment in life. These days I hope my works can somehow touch other people's emotions too.

What is your creative process like?

For my personal work, I usually started with doodling lots of sketches or looking back to some sparks of ideas that I might've drawn in my mini sketchbook. Most of the time, my aim is to create a story moment, even when I draw a standing character/creature - even creatures have their own unique stories. After a particular sketch jump out at me, I then take it and polish it further. This includes finding references, do a couple of studies and variations before finally move to creating the final illustration/design.. either straight into digital or with traditional medium.

What kind of music do you listen while you are working?

This depends on the piece that I'm working on. Ambience music that I can play over and over again are good.. a specific movie soundtrack for a specific piece is always a great one too.

What inspires you most of all?

Because for some reason my brain is always filled with imaginative stuff, these days I'm more inspired by things that happened in daily life - both mundane or extraordinaire. I find it fascinating how different people/animals/other elements react to different situations. My personal views on these daily situations combined with random stuff that happen in my mind are things that tickle my brain every day.

Artists you admire:

There are way too many great artists that I admire.. each for a different reason but mostly because of their unique personal vision - I don't think I can list all of them here. Old masters like Mucha, John Singer Sargent, NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker are so great.. you can also find the list of the great living artists/designers on the right hand side of my blog and that's just a few that I put in.. there are so many that I'm sure I missed there.

How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?

I promote my work through my website, blog and other usual social media (twitter, facebook, etc).

What are you working on at this time?

I just finished a series of illustrations for Kinokuniya Book Store in Sydney, Australia. For daytime work wise, I involve in creating some visual development works for some movies and also giving art direction for commercials that hopefully will be up early next year. I also still working on various personal projects in my free time - one of them is a children book that will hopefully see the light of the day one day.

Mi nombre es Charles Santoso. Soy un artista / ilustrador que vive actualmente en Sydney, Australia. Durante el día, trabajo para un estudio de animación llamado Animal Logic, creando arte conceptual (con un enfoque en el diseño de personajes) para animaciones y anuncios de televisión. En mi tiempo libre ilustro mis proyectos personales, haciendo dibujos para exposiciones individuales y grupales para el futuro. Uso Photoshop para mis obras digitales y me gusta el lápiz para mis trabajos tradicionales. Estos dos últimos meses, también he comenzado a sumergirme en el mundo del óleo y los acrílicos.

¿Cuándoempezaste a dibujar/pintar y por qué?

Creo que desde siempre me ha gustado expresarme a través del dibujo, desde que era un niño pequeño. Poder verter mis pensamientos y emociones en mi dibujo / pintura siempre ha sido un proceso realmente importante para encontrar la satisfacción en mi vida. Ahora mismo espero que mis obras, de alguna manera, también pueden tocar las emociones de otras personas.

¿Cómo estu proceso creativo?

Mi trabajo personal generalmente se inicia con un montón de garabatos o echando un viztazo a algunas de las ideas que he dibujado en mi sketchbook. La mayoría de las veces, mi objetivo es crear un momento de la historia, incluso cuando dibujo simplemente un personaje o criatura -incluso las criaturas tienen sus historias propias y únicas. Después de perfilar un dibujo en particular, lo tomo y lo perfecciono en profundidad. Esto incluye encontrar referencias, hacer un par de estudios y variaciones antes de proceder a la creación de la ilustración o diseño final, ya sea directamente en formato digital o con un medio tradicional.

¿Quétipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?

Depende de la pieza que estoy trabajando. La música ambiental que pueda poner una y otra vez es buena. Una banda sonora específica para una determinada pieza también es una buena idea.

¿Qué eslo que más te inspira?

Por alguna razón mi mente siempre está llena de cosas imaginativas, aunque en estos días me siento más inspirado por cosas que pasaron en la vida cotidiana, tanto mundanas como extraordinarias. Me parece fascinante cómo diferentes personas, animales y objetos reaccionan a diferentes situaciones. Mi opinión personal sobre estas situaciones diarias junto con cosas al azar que suceden en mi mente son los elementos que activan mi cerebro día a día.

Artistasa los que admiras:

Hay demasiados grandes artistas a los que admiro... cada uno por una razón diferente, pero sobre todo por su visión única y personal. No creo que pudiera hacer aquí una lista de todos ellos. Viejos maestros como Mucha, John Singer Sargent, NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker son tan grandes... También se puede encontrar una lista de artistas vivos y grandes diseñadores a los que admiro en la columna derecha de mi blog y esos son sólo unos pocos. Estoy seguro de que hay muchos que se me olvidan.

¿Cómousas internet para promocionar/vender tu arte?

Promociono mi trabajo a través de mi web, blog y otros medios sociales habituales (Twitter, Facebook, etc).

¿En quéestás trabajando en este momento?

Acabo de terminar una serie de ilustraciones para la tienda de libros Kinokuniya en Sydney, Australia. Something about yourself:

I'm a twenty-three year old illustrator fighting my way through the freelance jungle. I was born in Oxford, grew up in Somerset, I've been a long-term resident of Cornwall and current resident of Lancashire.

I've worked with a large number of clients internationally, raised lots of money for charity through my work and I'm represented by Advocate-Art agency (although I'm free to go and find my own commissions too!). My first children's book 'The Flyaway Blanket' is out on 15th November 2011 published by Magination Press/The American Psychological Association. I like cats, collect dinosaur toys and have a ocarina that looks like a strawberry.

When did you start drawing/painting and why?

I've been creating art for long than I remember, it's just one of the main ways I express myself. My mum told me that when i was a few years old I drew a picture of a rat for a school project, my teacher loved it so much she kept it on the wall for years and swore one day I'd be a famous artist.

What is your creative process like?

I usually start with pencil sketches (or a little research if it's needed) then, if I'm working digitally I'll ink the line drawing, scan it and render digitally or if I'm working traditionally I'll grab my paints and just go for it. I'm quite fearless in terms of mistakes with paint, as I think sometimes a mistake can lead you to something far better than you originally intended.

What kind of music do you listen while you are working?

There's a lot of variety depending what I'm working on and how I'm feeling! Recently, because it's Autumn, I've been listening to the likes of Amy Millan, Radical Face and Matt Pond PA. But a few days ago I had a delve into some old funk/soul music for the afternoon!

What inspires you most of all?

I usually feel most inspired after a wander around somewhere. A walk by the sea, through woods or a city just bombards you with inspiration. It clears my head and makes me more alert to absorb scraps of colour, interesting faces, compositions and conversations which all merge and resurface later as an idea!

Artists you admire:

At the moment some of my favourite artists are Jillian Tamaki, Kali Ciesemier, Andrew Hem, Dominique Goblet, Gustav Klimt, Sara Ogilvie, Oliver Jeffers and about 9 million other very very talented illustrators and friends I know through real life or the internet.

How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?

I've got my paws in most of the social media/professional pots on the internet. My website is very important, I completely re-made it recently (and had to learn how to code as I went along!) and it shows my online portfolio, sketchbook work and information in a concise but friendly manner. I'm also an avid user of Twitter, it's an incredibly powerful tool for a freelancer (and helps beat back the loneliness of working alone!). I've built a lot of good relationships with potential clients/collaborators over Twitter and secured a number of fantastic jobs through it.

What are you working on at this time?

After finishing off a hefty to-do list last week, I now have a pretty clear schedule! Although that's not great news on the financial front, optimistically, it does give me a good expanse of time to work on a children's book I'm writing and illustrating at the moment. I'm very excited about it but won't say any more at this stage!

Soy bastante valiente en términos de errores con la pintura, ya que creo que a veces un error puede conducir a algo mucho mejor de lo previsto en un principio.

¿Quétipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?

Hay mucha variedad en función de lo que estoy trabajando y cómo me siento. Recientemente, ya que es otoño, he estado escuchando a gente como Amy Millan, Radical Face y Matt Pond PA. Hace unos días me apeteció ahondar en la música funk y soul.

Normalmente me siento más inspirada después de un paseo por algún lugar. Un paseo por el mar, a través de bosques o por la ciudad ciudad me llenan inspiración. Me despeja la cabeza y me hace estar más alerta para absorber colores, rostros interesantes, composiciones y conversaciones que se fusionan y reaparecen más tarde como una idea.

¿Cómousas internet para promocionar/vender tu arte?

Tengo puesto un pie en la mayoría de los medios de comunicación social/profesional en Internet. Mi página web es muy importante, la he reconstruido completamente hace poco (¡y tuve que aprender a trabajar con códigos a medida que avanzaba!) y muestra mi portafolio, el trabajo de bocetos e información de manera concisa pero agradable. También soy un ávida usuaria de Twitter, que es una herramienta increíblemente poderosa para un profesional independiente (y ayuda a vencer a la soledad de trabajar en soledad). He construido un montón de buenas relaciones con potenciales clientes y colaboradores en Twitter y conseguí un número fantástico de trabajos a través de él.

¿En quéestás trabajando en este momento?

Después de terminar una larga lista de tareas pendientes la semana pasada, ahora tengo el horario bastante vacío. A pesar de que no es muy buena noticia en cuanto a economía se refiere, con optimismo, esto de da tiempo para trabajar en un libro para niños que estoy escribiendo e ilustrando en este momento. Estoy muy entusiasmada con él, ¡pero no diré nada más por ahora!

I printed the cover on color paper and I've included a couple of blank pages at the end of the book for children (and not that young ones) to draw their own robots. What you see in the image is a part of the new project I'm in right now: a coloring book for kids! I've been thinking about the idea for a long time and last week I finally began to draw some character sketches. As you probably have noticed, robots are the main topic. I hesitated between robots, monsters and more things and I've finally decided for the first option, although if the result is good I will probably make more books for other characters. I think I will include 10 robots inside the book and one more for the cover. I will print them in A5 size paper and put them together as a little book. It may be available in the shop from tomorrow or Wednesday so stay tuned ;)

Lo que podéis ver en la imagen es una parte del nuevo proyecto que tengo entre manos: ¡un libro de colorear para niños! Llevaba mucho tiempo con la idea dando vueltas por mi cabeza y la semana pasada por fin empecé a hacer bocetos sobre los personajes. Como ya os habréis dado cuenta el tema gira en torno a los robots. Estuve dudando entre robots, monstruos y alguna cosa más y finalmente me decidí por los primeros, aunque si el resultado me convence puede que haga más de un libro para cada tema que se me ocurra. Creo que incluiré 10 robots dentro del libro y uno más para la portada. Los imprimiré en tamaño A5 y los uniré en forma de cuaderno. Quizás esté disponible en la tienda a partir de mañana o el miércoles así que estad pendientes ;)

Something about yourself:

My name is James, I'm an illustrator and Designer and I'm lucky enough to have just moved to Brighton in England to complete a masters along-side my freelance work. I like to make character-centric, energetic and happy-fun-time drawings.

When did you start drawing/painting and why?

With me it's the usual 'since I can remember'. I grew up surrounded by influences that instilled me with a real love for characters and adventure, like computer-games, cartoons, films, comics, even cereal boxes. I think originally when I was really young, drawing was a way for me to re-produce these characters, and create ones of my own and insert them into their own worlds, their own 'adventures'. It developed from there into actually becoming the main focus of my life and a real passion for all things encompassing creativity and design.

What is your creative process like?

I usually like to start with an idea, whether it's vague or focused. I tend to really struggle if I don't have an idea or direction. I feel like when I have the idea nailed or a solid brief it gives me the freedom to focus on my drawing. Usually if a project contains characters I'll spend awhile designing and refining the characters, I can go through 5-10 versions of each character until I'm really happy with it - it's rare that I'll draw a character and be happy with it first time over. I like to think of it like evolving a Pokemon or something, but then most Pokemon seem to look worse after they evolve.. so maybe not. From there it's creating a layout for the image, solid pencil lines followed by inking with ink and brush - then I'll usually scan in my ink lines and colour digitally with a variety of brushes, textures and colour palettes.

What kind of music do you listen while you areworking?

That's tough really, usually it's just a case of what's new to me at the time. My favourite band is Animal Collective if that gives you some idea but I like to think my music taste is pretty broad. I actually usually end up watching TV shows - I'm pretty addicted to good TV (usually American). I find it keeps me entertained and focused while I work, realistically it probably makes me far less efficient at both watching TV and creating work.

What inspires you most of all?

I think my inspiration really boils down to seeing the drive and creativity in other people, I love seeing the amazing things that other people accomplish, whether it be building huge-ass buildings or managing to surf at 50 mph on just their face or something. I think it's too easy to get bogged down in the work of other artists and it carries a real risk of making you feel inadequate, a real turning point for me as an artist was to start looking at more abstract sources for inspiration and not to put too much weight on what other artists can do, everyone can improve.

Artists you admire:

This'll probably contradict the last answer but recently I've really loved the work of Luke Pearson, Sam Bosma, Clement Lefevre, Nick Edwards, Enrique Fernandez...

...I think if I keep going I'll start to feel inadequate.

How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?

I like to use it to socialise first and fore-most, I think the promotion kind of follows on from this. I like to think that if people see my work via something like Twitter, Society6, Tumblr or Flickr and like it I've successfully promoted myself, but I'd rather focus on putting time into improving my art rather than stuffing the art that I've already made up people's noses. I sell my work through a variety of sources, like Society6 and inPRNT but I'd really like to remove the middle-man from this process and sell them from my own online shop.

What are you working on at this time?

I've just started a masters and the main project for this will entail writing and illustrating a story, which is something I've not done before. On top of that I'm looking forward to creating more fan-art orientated work when I can, the next one is a biggy. I also need to pull my finger out and make a website, it's something I'm woefully lacking in.

Mi nombre es James, soy ilustrador y diseñador, y tengo la suerte de acabar de mudarme a Brighton, en Inglaterra, para hacer un máster a la vez que mi trabajo como autónomo. Me gusta hacer dibujos centrados en personajes, enérgicos y divertidos.

¿Cuándo empezaste a dibujar/pintar y por qué?

Mi caso es el habitual "desde que tengo memoria". Crecí rodeado de influencias que me inculcaron un gran amor por los personajes y la aventura, como juegos de ordenador, dibujos animados, películas, cómics, incluso las cajas de cereales. Creo que originalmente cuando era muy joven, el dibujo para mí era una manera de reproducir estos personajes, y crear los míos propios e insertarlos en sus propios mundos, sus propias aventuras. Desde ahí se desarrolló hasta ahora, convirtiéndose en el tema principal de mi vida y en una verdadera pasión por todo lo que abarca la creatividad y el diseño.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo?

Normalmente me gusta empezar con una idea, ya sea vaga o centrada. Tiendo a frustrarme si no tengo un dirección. Siento que cuando tengo una idea fija o un breve esquema, tengo libertad absoluta para centrarme en el dibujo. Por lo general, si un proyecto contiene personajes, empleo un tiempo en el diseño y la caracterización de los personajes. Puedo hacer entre 5 y 10 versiones de cada personaje hasta que estoy contento con él. Es raro que dibuje un personaje y esté satisfecho con la primera propuesta. Me gusta pensar en ello como en la evolución de un Pokémon o algo así, pero la mayoría de los Pokemon parece que se ven peor después de evolucionar ..así que quizás no. A partir de ahí viene la creación de un diseño para la imagen, líneas sólidas a lápiz seguido por el entintado con bolis y pincel. Después de esto normalmente escaneo mis líneas de tinta y coloreo de manera digital con una gran variedad de pinceles, texturas y paletas de colores.

¿Qué tipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?

Eso es realmente difícil, por lo general depende que lo que es nuevo para mí en ese momento. Mi grupo favorito es Animal Collective si eso te da una idea pero me gusta pensar que mi gusto musical es bastante amplio. En realidad, muchas veces termino viendo programas de televisión. Estoy bastante enganchado a la buena televisión (por lo general americana). Me parece que me mantiene entretenido y concentrado mientras trabajo, aunque siendo realistas, probablemente me hace mucho menos eficiente.

¿Qué es lo que más te inspira?

Creo que mi inspiración realmente se reduce a observar la dirección y la creatividad de otras personas. Me encanta ver las maravillas que otros logran, ya sea la construcción de grandes edificios o hacer surf a 50 mph y esas cosas. Creo que es demasiado fácil estancarse en la obra de otros artistas y que conlleva un riesgo real de hacerte sentir mal. Un verdadero punto de inflexión para mí como artista fue empezar a buscar fuentes más abstractas de inspiración y no darle demasiada importancia a lo que otros artistas pueden hacer, todo el mundo puede mejorar.

Me gusta usarlo para socializar principalmente, creo que la promoción surge a continuación de esto. Pero prefiero centrarme en dedicarle tiempo a mejorar mi arte en lugar de restregar el arte que ya he hecho en las narices de la gente. Vendo mi trabajo a través de una variedad de fuentes, como Society6 e inPRNT pero me gustaría eliminar el intermediario de este proceso y venderlos en mi propia tienda en línea.

¿En qué estás trabajando en este momento?

Acabo de empezar un máster y el proyecto principal de este es escribir e ilustrar una historia, que es algo que no he hecho antes. A Tender Moment - Silver Fox - Shaped Zinc Etching

Something about yourself:

My name is Jessica Gowling and I'm from beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I have a BFA in Printmaking from the Alberta College of Art & Design. I specialize in screenprint, etching and book art but also often use drawing, mixed media & craft in my practice as well. My primary focus and biggest influence in my work is the natural world, specifically animals.

When did you start drawing/painting and why?

Like anyone, I dabbled in the arts & creative activities as a child, but it wasn't until High School that I took a true interest in my artistic endeavors and began investing more time in my drawings, paintings, etc. In first year during my studies towards a Drawing BFA, I took an intro to intaglio printmaking course and was hooked and switched majors.

What is your creative process like?

Explaining the ins and outs of some of the VERY technical process I use to create visual art with, is probably best left to Wikipedia in terms of Etching, Screen & Relief Printmaking. Essentially in all of these processes, I draw a design and make a stencil or a plate (stamp) based off of that design. Then using these stencils or plates, I print a series of original images all by hand using hand mixed inks. Many of these images require the layering of multiple stencils or plates to create a complete image. The collection of these limited fine art prints, which all get signed and numbered, is known as an edition.

What kind of music do you listen while you areworking?

I love all kinds of music, but for the most part I am currently loving electronic and dubstep music while I'm at work in the studio. It has minimal lyrics, great bass lines to groove to and is super up-beat so I can get things accomplished! Crystal Castles, Ratatat, Pretty Lights, Holy Fuck, Bassnectar, Mr. Oizo, Deadmau5 are some artists/bands/djs currently on heavy rotation.

What inspires you most of all?

Wild animals, line, process, detail, nature, texture, environment, time voids, fleeting moments, touch, learning, memory, intimacy, nostalgia, narrative, chance, love, anatomy, materials and Canadiana collectively motivate my practice.

Artists you admire:

The most contemporary wildlife artist I currently admire is Josh Keyes. He is a painter, who apart from having a real gift for color, light and texture, is also able to speak volumes about the human relationship with animals and the natural world with his surreal canvases. Kiki Smith is also a huge inspiration to me. Although she doesn't strictly deal with animals & nature in all of her work, a lot of her etchings, drawings and sculpture are about her relationship with the natural world. I admire the gritty, raw and real feeling of her line quality and the way she juxtaposes animals with one another or with herself.

How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?

Most recently I opened an Etsy shop and am excited to finally have my work available to an international market. I have had a portfolio site for almost a decade now that showcases my artwork and has my curriculum vitae, basic contact info and links. I write a creative blog that I try to update daily, to not only share my artistic adventures with the world but also keeps me busy and staying productive. Twitter is a great way for me to share my artwork & art news instantly, and also is an awesomely supportive community.

What are you working on at this time?

Right now I am working on a new relief print of a barn owl in flight. My first relief print edition in 4 years, so I am excited! After this, it's back to working on some etchings. I have a number of other projects on the go, including building my inventory for an upcoming art expo in Vancouver called One of A Kind.

Algosobre ti:

Mi nombre es Jessica Gowling y soy de la bella Columbia Británica, Canadá. Tengo una licenciatura en Grabado de la Universidad de Alberta de Arte y Diseño. Me especializo en el arte de la serigrafía, el grabado y el libro, pero también utilizo a menudo el dibujo, técnicas mixtas y artesanía. El tema en el que me centro y la influencia más grande en mi trabajo es el mundo natural, especialmente los animales.

¿Cuándoempezaste a dibujar/pintar y por qué?

Como cualquiera, me interesé por el arte y las actividades creativas desde niña, pero no fue hasta la escuela secundaria cuando tuve un verdadero interés en mi labor artística y comencé a invertir más tiempo en mis dibujos, pinturas, etc En el primer año, durante mis estudios para el BFA de dibujo, hice un curso de introducción al grabado calcográfico y me atrapó y fue a más.

¿Cómo estu proceso creativo?

Para explicar los pormenores de algunos de los procesos (muy técnicos) que uso para crear arte visual, es mejor acudir a la Wikipedia en términos de Grabado, Planchas y Grabado en relieve. Esencialmente en todos estos procesos, dibujo un diseño y hago una plantilla o una placa (sello) basada en ese diseño. Luego, utilizando las plantillas o las placas, imprimo una serie de imágenes originales manualmente con tintas mezcladas a mano. Muchas de estos diseños requieren la superposición de varias plantillas o placas para crear una imagen completa. La colección de estas impresiones artísticas limitadas, todas firmadas y numeradas, se conoce como una edición.

¿Quétipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?

Me encanta todo tipo de música, pero ahora mismo escucho sobre todo música electrónica y dubstep mientras estoy en el trabajo en el estudio. Tiene letras mínimas, grandes melodías en el bajo para bailar y es muy movido, así que me sirve para acelerar el trabajo. Crystal Castles, Ratatat, Pretty Lights, Holy Fuck, Bassnectar, Mr. Oizo, Deadmau5 son algunos de los artistas/bandas/djs que actualmente giran en mi equipo.

¿Qué eslo que más te inspira?

Los animales salvajes, la línea, el proceso, los detalles, la naturaleza, la textura, el medio ambiente, los vacíos de tiempo, momentos fugaces, el tacto, el aprendizaje, la memoria, la intimidad, la nostalgia, la narrativa, el azar, el amor, la anatomía, los materiales materiales y Canadiana colectivamente motivan mi arte.

Artistasa los que admiras:

El artista de vida salvaje que actualmente más admiro es Josh Keyes. Es un pintor que además de tener un verdadero don para el color, la luz y la textura, también es capaz de transmitir mucho sobre la relación humana con los animales y el mundo natural con sus cuadros surrealistas. Kiki Smith también es una gran inspiración para mí. Aunque no trata estrictamente con los animales y la naturaleza en todo su trabajo, muchos de sus grabados, dibujos y esculturas hablan sobre su relación con el mundo natural. Admiro la sensación de aspereza, crudeza y realidad de la calidad de su línea y la forma en que yuxtapone los animales entre sí o con ella misma.

¿Cómousas internet para promocionar/vender tu arte?

Recientemente he abierto una tienda de Etsy y estoy muy emocionada de finalmente tener mi trabajo a disposición de un mercado internacional. Tengo un portfolio online desde hace casi una década que muestra mi obra de arte y tiene mi currículum vitae, información básica de contacto y enlaces. Escribo un blog creativo que trato de actualizar todos los días, no sólo para compartir mis aventuras con el mundo artístico, sino también para mantenerme ocupada y seguir siendo productiva. Para mí, Twitter es una gran forma de compartir mi obra de arte y noticias al instante, y también es una comunidad de apoyo increíble.

¿En quéestás trabajando en este momento?

Ahora mismo estoy trabajando en una nueva impresión en relieve de una lechuza en vuelo. Mi primera edición impresión en relieve en 4 años así que ¡estoy emocionada! Después de esto, es hora de volver a trabajar en algunos grabados. Tengo una serie de proyectos en marcha, incluyendo la construcción de mi inventario para una exposición de arte en Vancouver llamada One of A Kind.

After some time thinking about it, I made some brooches using fragments of my drawings. They are printed on cardboard, glued to a rigid plastic and coated with satin glaze for firmness. They have a badge in the back so you can pin them on any type of fabric. So far I have only these four, but here you have the link to the shop section where they are and where more of them will be appearing little by little. I hope you like them :)

Después de algún tiempo pensándolo, he hecho unos broches usando fragmentos de algunos de mis dibujos. Están impresos en cartulina, pegados a un plástico rígido y barnizados con un esmalte satinado para reforzarlos. En la parte posterior tienen un imperdible para que los podáis llevar en cualquier tipo de tejido. Por ahora solo tengo estos cuatro, pero os dejo aquí el enlace a la sección de la tienda donde están y donde irán apareciendo más poco a poco. Espero que os gusten :)

Something about yourself:

My name is Heidi M, I live in Dorset (England), by the sea. I work mainly in watercolours for my illustrations, and with felt when working on my new range of plushies (one of a kind toys).

When did you start drawing/painting and why?

I have been drawing since i was tiny, I have always loved to draw. I find it a great escape from the world. As I grew so did my passion for drawing and painting. When I draw I want to tell a story with pictures, I want to create a heart warming image that will make you smile or laugh.

What is your creative process like?

I find that I never stop being creative, I even have a sketch book by my bed. When I have an idea I sketch it out and work from there. I have found that usually my first ideas are the ones I return to. Adding colour is my favourite part as it brings to life my work.

What kind of music do you listen while you are working?

I listen more to Radio 4. It's a topical station that has radio plays and discussions. Music gets me very distracted, unless it's a nice classical piece.

What inspires you most of all?

The magic of storytelling and the magic of creating pictures. I find it wonderful that through a story a whole world can open up where anything can happen. I guess i still believe in fairy tales :D Also when people follow their passion regardless, they see through the dreams no matter how long it takes.

Artists you admire:

So many from Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera to illustrator Quentin Blake. I admire any artist that has the courage to create and put there work out there for the world to see. It's like laying your heart out.

How do you use the internet to promote/sell your art?

I use Twitter and have a Facebook fan page. I try to have a mix of things that I post up, for example what my latest project is, show pics of what I am currently working on, I engage people and ask their opinions which I value and I also tweet my new listings in Etsy. I think it's important to build a fan base not just built on trying to get sales but on building a creative community around what you create.

What are you working on at this time?

Currently I am working on developing my illustrations into plushies (one of a kinds dolls, animals...). I have spent months working on ideas and they will all come with illustrations as well as developing stories to go with them.

Mi nombre es Heidi M y vivo en Dorset (Inglaterra), junto al mar. Para mis ilustraciones trabajo sobre todo en acuarelas, y con fieltro para mi nueva gama de peluches.

¿Cuándo empezaste a dibujar/pintar y por qué?

He dibujado desde que era pequeña, siempre me ha gustado. Pienso que es una forma genial de evadirme del mundo. A medida que crecía también creció mi pasión por el dibujo y la pintura. Cuando dibujo quiero contar una historia con imágenes, quiero crear una imagen reconfortante que te haga sonreír o reír a carcajadas.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo?

Me parece que nunca dejo de ser creativa, incluso tengo un cuaderno de bocetos cerca de mi cama. Cuando tengo una idea hago un boceto y trabajo desde ahí. He abservado que por lo general mis primeras ideas son aquellas a las que vuelvo. Añadir color es mi parte favorita, ya que le da vida a mi trabajo.

¿Qué tipo de música escuchas mientras estás trabajando?

Escucho más Radio 4. Es una cadena normal de charlas radiofónicas y discusiones. La música me distrae mucho, a menos que sea una pieza clásica agradable.

¿Qué es lo que más te inspira?

La magia de la narración y la creación de imágenes. Me parece maravilloso que a través de una historia se pueda abrir todo un mundo en el que cualquier cosa puede suceder. Supongo que todavía creo en los cuentos de hadas :D También cuando las personas persiguen una pasión, un sueño, sin importar cuánto tiempo tarden en alcanzarlo.

Artistas a los que admiras:

Muchos, desde Frida Kahlo y Diego Rivera al ilustrador Quentin Blake. Admiro a cualquier artista que tenga el coraje de crear y exponer su trabajo a la vista de todo el mundo. Es como enseñar el corazón.

¿Cómo usas internet para promocionar/vender tu arte?

Uso Twitter y tengo una página en Facebook. Trato de tener una mezcla de cosas para colgar, por ejemplo, contar cuál es mi último proyecto, mostrar fotos de lo que estoy trabajando actualmente, involucrar a la gente y conocer sus opiniones, y también twittear mis artículos nuevos en Etsy. Creo que es importante construir una base de fans que no trate simplemente de conseguir ventas, sino de formar una comunidad creativa en torno a tu trabajo.

¿En qué estás trabajando en este momento?

Actualmente estoy trabajando para convertir mis ilustraciones en peluches (muñecas, animales...). He estado meses trabajando sobre las ideas y todos ellos vienen con ilustraciones, así como sus correspondientes historias.
